Book review: The Housekeeper and the Professor

My son (known around here as Pumpkin) went to the local bookstore and told them, my mom’s birthday is coming up, she likes to read, do you have any suggestions? Rather enterprising, don’t you think?

Let me tell you about the book he gave me: The Housekeeper and the Professor by Yoko Ogawa.

The Professor has a unique problem. He is unable to make new memories. His memory stops in 1975. As a result of a car accident, he can recall the distant past but his recent memory lasts only 80 minutes. He is a brilliant mathematician, but each day he has to re-learn what he learned the day before. Although it sounds sad, I did not find it depressing. In a way it’s a love story, though not in the traditional sense, about the meaning of family and living in the moment. Continue reading

Uncluttering, very slowly

Lately I’ve been feeling somewhat overwhelmed by Stuff. You know, all those things that seem to accumulate in the house. Items that sit around requiring organization and taking up space. All that Stuff.

With the iterative nature of decluttering in mind, I decided to take a stroll around the main living area of my house to see if there was anything else that suddenly seemed unnecessary. A quick look around (the space is not very big, after all!) and I immediately found 10 objects that I can definitely do without… Continue reading

Happy List

Today I’m happy because:

  • The weather is beautiful, a perfect day for the lake.
  • We have plans to spend the afternoon at the lake, with a bunch of friends. (Note aforementioned weather.)
  • Pumpkin is having an excellent time in Spain. At least, I assume he is, since I’ve barely heard from him. Not that I’m trying to guilt him into writing me, or anything like that…

Nerdiness

OK, OK, I know, I’m a nerd. I can’t help it. That’s just who I am. Today I’m embracing my inner nerdiness! Today I give you the Top 10 Indicators of my nerdiness. The sad part is how easily I came up with 10 things. And I didn’t even mention my thick glasses, my fascination with N.P.R., or the subscription I used to have to Science Fiction Magazine. Here’s my list… Continue reading

I never would have guessed

Best part of the day yesterday?  I never would have guessed, but it turned out to be around 11:00pm, when I was just about at my wit’s end.  Here’s what happened… Monkey was very tired, and not feeling quite up … Continue reading

A Day at the Lake

Today was a rare day. A weekday with the kids, no work, no school, no camp, no plans! So we packed some lunch and went to the lake. This morning I was debating whether or not to go. I was … Continue reading
