Another reminder: Life is short

I want to write a positive post. I want to discuss how to focus on the important things, the things that truly matter to us. I want to quote James Taylor: “the secret of life is enjoying the passage of … Continue reading

Kindness of Strangers

A recent post on RealDelia and two news stories has me thinking about the kindness of strangers. When a family’s house was threatened by a mudslide, strangers came out of the woodwork to help them. On the flip side, a woman is caught on camera treating a cat cruelly and she becomes the object of death threats.

Are most people kind to strangers?

Once, when I was traveling overseas, a very kind stranger came to me rescue. I was using a bright red day-planner to organize my entire life. All my travel documents, plane tickets, passport, and loads of cash were in that day-planner… Continue reading

Siblings without rivalry?

I have confession to make: My kids fight with each other. A lot.

People watching at the swimming hole

We’ve been to lots of swimming holes lately. A pond in a nearby town, the local swimming pool, the beach. I’m often in the water with Monkey, but sometimes she finds friends or ends up jumping off the dock a million times and I have a chance to people watch. People watching is one of my favorite past times. And the pool, pond or beach? The best people watching.

A few observations: … Continue reading

Happy List

Today I’m happy because:

  • The weather is beautiful, a perfect day for the lake.
  • We have plans to spend the afternoon at the lake, with a bunch of friends. (Note aforementioned weather.)
  • Pumpkin is having an excellent time in Spain. At least, I assume he is, since I’ve barely heard from him. Not that I’m trying to guilt him into writing me, or anything like that…

Family shorthand, and George Forman (huh?)

Wondering why there’s a photo of George Foreman? I promise, it’ll be clear if you keep reading. But this post really isn’t about Mr. Foreman. I read something by Real Delia the other day, and I’m still mulling it over. … Continue reading
