Do your kids read?
I learned to read at a very young age. I taught myself to read, by first memorizing the books that my mother read to me, then learning to read the print that went along with the words, and then making … Continue reading
Definition of Adulthood
Rabbi Moshe New in Montreal, defines being grown up as: “the ability to fully integrate that which we know, practically.” He then goes on to reference the Kabbalah, which has a Hebrew word for this: da’at. Da’at is usually translated … Continue reading
What’s your biggest kitchen disaster?
Cake disaster at King Arthur Test Kitchen We’ve been talking about kitchen mishaps, mostly of the messy variety, around here lately. At Casa 1Sentence, we started telling a few more cooking stories, of different types of kitchen mishaps. Um, … Continue reading

Kitchen Disasters
Yesterday’s photo from The Frugal Girl brought back such a fun memory. It was about 2 years ago. My daughter, known around here as Monkey, was helping me in the kitchen. She added a bunch of flour to the mixer, … Continue reading

Parenting: Does discipline require isolation?
If you routinely isolate your child when he misbehaves, what’s the bigger message? Yes, you may get “better” behavior, if what you mean by “better” is “more compliant.” You may have a child who does what you want when you say you want it. But aren’t you also teaching him that when he misbehaves, you will withhold your love? [...]

Baby Nostalgia
I’ve given away all the baby bottles, the port-a-crib, and the sippy cups. The maternity clothes are long gone, given to friends and acquaintances and anyone who would take them.
I no longer have to get up several times per night to prepare formula or to change a diaper. I can’t remember the last time I had to drag myself awake so I could comfort a crying child.
So why, why do I still sometimes find myself longing for that new baby smell? [...] Continue reading
Siblings without rivalry?
I have confession to make: My kids fight with each other. A lot.
Two recent conversations with friends about their kids’ relentless arguing has me thinking about sibling rivalry. My father once described the job of a parent as part cheerleader, part teacher, part playmate, and part traffic cop — keeping the kids apart during the worst of the fighting.
If I hear one more person tell me, “my boys are each other’s best friends,” or, “my kids couldn’t bear to spend the summer apart,” I think it might send me to the looney bin. My kids, um, definitely not each other’s best friends.
But here the thing: I’m OK with that. [...] Continue reading

Happy List
Today I’m happy because:
- The weather is beautiful, a perfect day for the lake.
- We have plans to spend the afternoon at the lake, with a bunch of friends. (Note aforementioned weather.)
- Pumpkin is having an excellent time in Spain. At least, I assume he is, since I’ve barely heard from him. Not that I’m trying to guilt him into writing me, or anything like that…

Family shorthand, and George Forman (huh?)
Wondering why there’s a photo of George Foreman? I promise, it’ll be clear if you keep reading. But this post really isn’t about Mr. Foreman. I read something by Real Delia the other day, and I’m still mulling it over. … Continue reading

A bit of baking
I just love this photo of Monkey, with her face covered with the after-effects of baking and that huge smile. She was quite pleased with the results of our baking experiments. You see, it’s been miserably hot and humid here forever … well, … Continue reading
